I was reading an article in Time Magazine about this really cool eco-village in up state New York. These folks are really living the good life. They live and work on a 175 acre farm that seeks to be very environmentally friendly. They grow their own organic fruits and vegetables. They have a common kitchen where they can cook and eat together. And they have a lake on the property for fishing, boating, and just good old fun and relaxation. Most, if not, all the homes are solar powered and have other energy saving devices as well.

What could be more fun and exciting than this? Am I crazy or what? I'm thinking (again) why not find a bunch of other people who like to do these sort of things and go for it. We only live once. So we get together head to East Texas. Find a property with about 150 acres of wide open space. Buy it, build on it (GREEN OF COURSE) and live on it. I'm talking about jumping off the edge. Taking the plunge. Escaping the cement jungle. It can and should be done. I'm ready to go for it.

There should be a way to build a cooperative kind of spirit around this idea. 12 to 15 hard working intelligent people could pull this off in a heartbeat. We could create eco-village mania so to speak. It could and should be an income producing property. It should be managed by the owner members and should set an example and inspire many more ventures or I should say adventures like it.

So what are we waiting for city slickers. Give me an email and tell me what you think.

My recent blog on Move-On's anti-liquid coal campaign has been "rebuked"!...THANKS to Green Colonies member JAPHET~who is obviously more familiar with the Liquid Coal Campaign than I (or Move On for that matter) and the advantages to our search for cleaner energy.

I'd like to reference this instance as one of the Key reasons the Green Colonies Community is being created...and why I try to continue to grow the membership through reaching out to the Leaders in the Green Industry and encouraging them to join!

Debate and collaboration stem the flowering of solutions efficiently and effectively.  As more and more ECO-leaders come aboard...the Richer, more valid, and more usuable the content will become.

Collaboration through discovery, event planning, and project development will ensure that the Green Revolution is well on its way!  In Green Colonies, discussion, debate, and ultimatley Collaboration, set the stage for ACTION!

Below is a blog I wrote last week before I had heard about the advantage liquid coal MAY BRING...:

Help to stop the big coal give away

Hi,

Congress could vote in the next fews weeks on a bill that would double our greenhouse gas emissions from planes and cars. It sounds crazy, but this is exactly what will happen if a current plan to use "liquid coal" passes. Coal is the dirtiest of fossil fuels and we have a serious global warming problem.

I signed a petition urging Congress to vote no on tax breaks and subsidies on coal. Can you join me at the link below?

Thanks!

Wave power tipped as 'holy grail' for Australia

AFP, 17 May 2007 - New technology harnessing wave energy could be the "holy grail" for providing electricity and drinking water to Australia's major cities, Industry Minister Ian MacFarlane said Thursday.

The technology, developed with the help of more than 770 million dollars (636 million US) in seed funding from the government, works through fields of submerged buoys tethered to seabed pumps.

The buoys move in harmony with the motion of the passing waves, pumping pressurised seawater to shore to run turbines and pass through a desalination plant.

"The constancy of the waves even when the surface is dead calm means .... READ MORE ABOUT WHEN THE "WAVE FARMS" ARE TO BE CONSTRUCTED... Click HERE: http://www.wbcsd.org/plugins/DocSearch/details.asp?type=DocDet&ObjectId=MjQ2NTg

So glad to see that there is a green colony now!! :)
Here in Nicaragua with so much of the coastal land in foreign hands and the prospects of rampant construction just around the corner it has never been a better time to influence the
way things are to be done.  At www.nicageeks.com we are in a prime position to do that as part of our business involves the process of selling and marketing wind and solar powered systems with the future goal of positioning ourselves as the green consultants to the local land developers and homebuilders. There is so much to do in this country to help shape its future for its people and its environment. I am excited to be a part of that and feel optimistic about the possibilities that lie before me down here!

YEA!!! 44% of you that voted (total votes:16) said that You HAVE ALREADY CHANGED TO COMPACT FLOURESCENT LIGHTBULBS!!!  Hey ...I'm stoked...it's a great start!  This means that 7 people understand that switching out their Incandescent lightbulbs to Compact Flourescent bulbs:

  • Use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer.
  • Save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime
  • Generate 70 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.
  • In addition to other quality requirements, must turn on instantly, produce no sound, and fall within a warm color range or be otherwise labeled as providing cooler color tones.
  • Are available in different sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture, for indoors and outdoors.
Information sourced from ENERGY STAR :

BUT WAIT......I was shocked to see that 25% of you did not know WHAT COMPACT FLOURESCENT BULBS are.  So here's the downlow on this Highly efficient and Green-'leaning' energy source.:
CFL stands for compact fluorescent lamp, and it is a small fluorescent light bulb that uses at least 2/3 less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb and can be screwed into a regular light socket. Don’t let the fact that it is fluorescent turn you off! ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs must pass extensive testing to ensure they produce only the highest quality light. Qualified bulbs labeled “warm white” or “soft white” produce light like typical incandescent light bulbs. CFLs that have a cooler color (similar to bright white incandescent bulbs) are usually labeled “bright white” or “daylight” on the product packaging.
So change out a bulb....It's easy they can be found mostly anywhere from your LOCAL HARDWARE Store and perhaps even a drug store ...if you can't find them at your local ma and pop shop tell them to bring them into their inventory

If you must go elsewhere...try Home Depot, Target, or even Walmart...(yeah..they're even carrying organics now!)

THERE....don't you feel good to know that taking ECO- action can be as simple as CHANGING A LIGHTBULB!

CHEERS!,

Nearly 1,000 diplomats from around the world are meeting in Bonn Germany this week to draft a new global treaty to control greenhouse gases to replace the Kyoto Protocal which expires in 2012. The conference began on Monday, just days after the U.N.-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued its third major report on global warming. Earlier this year the panel declared that the warming of the earth's climate system in unequivocal and attributable to human activities. On Friday the group of 2,000 scientists said the means and technology to prevent global warming exist but that citizens of the world and governments must quickly take action.

While at University, I studied Agribusiness and thus made to complete courses in Crop, Dairy, and Water Sciences -to name a few.  During an Organic Agriculture course, as we spoke on growing Corn for Ethanol and using veggie products for blending with Diesel or on it's own as B100 biodiesel, a rancher's son spoke up about the deficiencies matched with the demands put on production of crop-based fuels.  He'd lived and worked his family farm since birth and contended that Biofuel crops create carbon dioxide pollution equalled to the carbon emissions of oil use---through crop production and harvest systems!

HHMMM...Well, the lesson I take away from his insights are aligned with my own....only....my perspective is this:
Don't rely on one source for everything...Diversify...Yeah...BioFuel is not THE answer...it's ONE of the solutions...Hydrogen and Solar are options too....we all just need to continue to keep open to new and alternative sciences, technologies, and suggestions!
Buy locally, Think Globally...purchase from your local ma and pop shops and make sure that they practice Social Responsibility.

Read what MSNBC is saying about relying solely on Biofuels:

While saying bioenergy represents an “extraordinary opportunity” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it warned that “rapid growth in liquid biofuel production will make substantial demands on the world’s land and water resources at a time when demand for both food and forest products is also rising rapidly.”

The Step it Up series brought to Whistler a new bread of event bringing guest speakers into a bar environment to educate the young hip and cool crowd of Whistler about different themes relating to the protection of our environment including the wellness of our own body, mind and spirit.

Surfrider Foundation in WhistlerLike it’s previous events, Hilltrip’s goal with the Step it Up series was to fight global warming. With an event every month from November 2006 to April 2007, the series included six different educational sessions about sustainability with a global warming twist. Through the whole series, Hilltrip was able to raise $550 to benefit the Snowrider Project of Surfrider Vancouver and a lot of people learned about ways to become a better steward of the environment and themselves.

Starting with a Sustainable Mountains Session in November , Step it Up no1 sent a strong message to the snow sport industry by having Jonaven Moore, a renown professional snowboarder, do a presentation on global warming and how negative PR is affecting our understanding of the issue, well timed after Tyler Bradley, the environmental chemist behind the creation of the first environmentally friendly ski wax in the world; Hillbilly Wax-Works & Ethica Enviro-Wax who had a satirical look at the state of the snow sport industry itself.

DJ Mat The Alien in WhistlerStep it Up no2 being close to Christmas, Hilltrip thought educating people about how making informed choices during the holiday season would help them reduce their environmental footprint and be good for their own body environment and organized a Sustainable Food Session. The session covered the concepts of SLOW food with Diana Rochon, RAW food with Sarinda Hoilett, SUPER food with Randall Carpenter and there was a slide show to give ideas to people on how they can green their holidays.
If you are interested you learn about how you can GREEN Christmas Holiday click here >>

Yoga in WhistlerFor the third Step it Up, we decided to do something a bit different than the usual sustainable environment type event by having an Awakening Session and introduce a spiritual approach to sustainability. We believe awareness and consciousness can play a big role in improving someone’s life and the world. For the occasion, we had Kelly Oswald of The Oracle, Tina James of World Yoga Within and Robbie Dagg & Friends with OM MANI PADME HUM.

The fourth session was done in conjunction with Surfrider Vancouver. The theme was Sustainable Watershed and Pina Belperio of Whistler Water Watch and June Van Der Star of Surfrider did great presentations followed by a Sea to Summit, a video where snowboarders, skateboarder, and surfers are talking about the entire hydrological cycle and how it relates to their day to day life. Following the session, we had the Enviro-Mental Showdown Party following the qualifier of the Showcase Showdown, an annual snowboard competition.

The fifth one was a Sustainable Energy Session and we had Sarah Valentine giving a few tips on how we can reduce our energy consumption easily and than Hilltrip went all out and presented 15 documentaries about energy and climate change over 2 days as part of the Sierra Club Energy Film Festival.
You can read more about the Energy Film Festive by clicking here >>
Step it Up in Whistler
As a way to end the series, Hilltrip teamed up with a bunch of local artists to present an Expression Session on Earth Day, April 22nd, and the last day of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) this year. Kostaman & The Vibrations opened at 7pm with a few reggae songs, Angie Nolan and MollyFi followed with poems and spoken words, Daniel Poisson, Chris Dyer, Olivier Roy, Jon Parris and Stan Matwychcuk had art pieces on display, Chili Thom & Feet Banks came to show their short film “High in the Mountain”, Animal Nation did a few raps, and Rainbo performed a hula hoops go-go set to the sound of DJ Parris. During the evening we also had the OxyMoron Martini, a heathy martini containin FrequenSea.

This last Step it Up event was also the launch of Green.Colonies.com in Whistler! It is also during that event that the winner for the Surf trip, the Option Snowboard, the SPY goggle and the O’Neill goodies were draw. There was so much going on, it was a great way to close the festival and the series in beauty.

Thanks to Whistler Brewing Company, Clif Bar, O’Neill, Deep Snow and Surf Experience, Option Snowboards and Spy for sponsoring the Step it Up series, Maxx Fish Bar & Lounge for letting us host the series, Surfrider Vancouver for setting an information table at each event, the speakers and artists for their performances and inspiration as well as all the people that have helped make this series of event happen…Nadia Cote, Marie-Lou, Giselle, Haley, Elexa, Sarah, Andrew, Adrian and all of those who came.

What is Green Power?
The term "green power" generally refers to electricity supplied in whole or in part from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, geothermal, hydropower, and various forms of biomass. Increasingly, electricity customers are being given electricity supply options, either as retail power markets open to competition or when their regulated utilities develop green pricing programs. More than 50% of retail customers in the United States now have an option of purchasing a green power product directly from their electricity supplier. In addition, consumers can support renewable energy development through the purchase of green energy certificates.

Why Buy Green Power?
By choosing to purchase a green power product, you can support increased development of renewable energy sources, which can reduce the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Greater reliance on renewable sources also provides economic benefits and can improve our national energy security.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's web site provides an additional discussion of the benefits of renewable energy.

How Do I Buy Green Power?
If retail electricity competition is allowed in your state, you may be able to purchase a green power product from an alternative electricity supplier. Some states have already implemented electricity competition. Check the Status of State Electric Industry Restructuring Activity (PDF 2.1 MB) map, prepared by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, to see if your state has passed an electricity competition law.

Even if your state is not implementing electricity market competition, you may still be able to purchase green power through your regulated utility. More than 600 regulated utilities spanning more than 30 states offer "green pricing" programs (see our map of green pricing programs). The term green pricing refers to an optional utility service that allows customers to support a greater level of utility investment in renewable energy by paying a premium on their electric bill to cover any above-market costs of acquiring renewable energy resources.

Finally, whether or not you have access to green power through your utility or a competitive electricity marketer, you can purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs). RECs (also known as green tags, green energy certificates, or tradable renewable certificates) represent the environmental attributes of power generated from renewable electric plants. A variety of organizations offer RECs separate from electricity service, that is, you need not switch from your current electricity supplier in order to purchase these certificates.

To find out what green power options are available in your state, please visit our Can I Buy Green Power in My State? page, where you can click on your state to view available green power products.

For more information on buying green power, see: Guide to Purchasing Green Power (PDF 1 MB). Download Adobe Reader

Green Power Evaluation and Certification
How can you be sure that your green power purchase will benefit the environment? For more information, see our Consumer Protection page.

Green-e is a voluntary certification and verification program for wholesale, retail, and commercial electricity products, tradable renewable certificates (TRCs) and utility green pricing programs in the U.S. Green-e certifies about 100 retail and wholesale green power marketers across the country.

The Environmental Resources Trust certifies renewable energy certificates (RECs) through its EcoPower certification program. Under EcoPower certification, RECs convey only the renewable energy attributes of renewable electricity and do not convey environmental benefits.

The Power Scorecard is a web-based information tool created by a coalition of environmental groups that lets consumers compare the environmental impacts of green power and conventional power products.

Selected Green Power Customers
Businesses and other non-residential customers such as municipalities and government agencies are increasingly recognizing that green power purchasing can help meet corporate or institutional goals related to environmental improvement and sustainability. Follow the link for a list of selected non-residential green power purchasers. The U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership has additional information on organizations purchasing green power.

"America is shifting to a 'green culture,' with more and more businesses understanding that environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility, By switching to alternative, renewable power sources, PepsiCo is proving that going green can be the choice of every generation." --said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson

Green power is produced from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. These energy sources are considered cleaner and have a superior environmental profile than conventional sources of electricity. Purchasing RECs helps drive the development of additional renewable energy capacity nationwide.

With some $30 trillion to be invested in energy production over the next 30 years, making the right low-carbon investments is one of the keys to fighting climate change. Carbon offsets help put a price on the climate change consequences of these investment decisions, and if properly structured can help move a portion of that $30 trillion investment into clean energy. While a lot of that investment will be in the developing world, some of it will be domestic. Demand for new power continues to rise in the US. It is our hope that carbon offsets can help new domestic energy be as clean as possible.
